Is Google Kenya playing dirty with Mocality?

There are some pretty serious allegations coming out against Google from Stefan Magdalinski who is the GM, E-commerce, Sub-Saharan Africa, MIH that has been posted on several blogs online today.

The post clearly points out that Google has been obtaining and calling the businesses listed in the Mocality directory as they try to push their ” Getting Kenyan Businesses Online” project to the market.

As White African says on his post today

The problem here is that the sting put on by Mocality is so complete. They have all the forensics and even voice recordings to show what Google is doing.”

Google has been lying to the business owners that they are in partnership with Mocality and it can offer help with website making (and domain upsell ) since Mocality only offers a listing.

Since October, Google’s GKBO appears to have been systematically accessing Mocality’s database and attempting to sell their competing product to our business owners. They have been telling untruths about their relationship with us, and about our business practices, in order to do so. As of January 11th, nearly 30% of our database has apparently been contacted.

Google, we are waiting…

UPDATE

A Kenyan broadcast business journalist just updated on his blog that Google have released a statement from Nelson Mattos, Vice-President for Product and Engineering, Europe and Emerging Markets.

We were mortified to learn that a team of people working on a Google project improperly used Mocality’s data and misrepresented our relationship with Mocality to encourage customers to create new websites. We’ve already unreservedly apologised to Mocality. We’re still investigating exactly how this happened, and as soon as we have all the facts, we’ll be taking the appropriate action with the people involved.

Still….
